How can the appropriation of a public space by users, neighbourhood associations and local residents be facilitated? This was the challenge set for 21 Solutions by the municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean for the park located at the corner of Rue de Menin and Rue des Etangs noirs. The team developed and facilitated a participatory strategy in order to collectively define projects for the park, ensure that they are backed by local people or non-profit organisations and promote positive ownership of the park.

After a very detailed analysis of the park and its uses with local residents, local organisations and users (children and parents in particular), two festive gatherings including fun workshops were held which led to the emergence of plans for the redevelopment and the reappropriation of the park and the formation of a local project group. Various projects were then gradually carried out, including the creation of a mural, awareness-raising about littering and the development of a football area. The Municipality even created and financed a dedicated position within one of the district’s non-profit organisations to run the scheme and ensure the project’s long-term continuation.
