EMAS and the revision of standard ISO 14001

Fact sheet

As part of its role of managing the EMAS helpdesk for the European Commission, 21 Solutions helped development this fact sheet, which is essential for understanding the revision of ISO 14001 and how it affects the EMAS Regulation.

The new version of ISO 14001, which was published in September 2015 and is the third revision since the standard’s creation in 1996, introduces the ‘High level structure’ (HLS) to be implemented in all standards of the ISO management system in order to facilitate the inclusion of requirements from different standards in an integrated management system. The revision also extended the standard’s scope by incorporating 21 ways to improve and strengthen the embedding of the organisation’s environmental management system into its core business. With the revision of the standard, ISO aims to provide a set of stable and common requirements for at least 10 years.
